“Gregor Samsa wakes up each morning, quietly leaves the house to take the same train, and works to pay off the family debt. But that world explodes one morning, when Gregor awakes to find himself changed. To those around him he is dangerous, untouchable vermin. Worse than that, he is a burden.”

Research

Fred Astaire, “Royal Wedding” (1951)
Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, “Dialogues of The Carmelites” (2018)
Apple advert, “Welcome Home by Spike Jonze” (2018)
Xie Rong, “I Am A Brush” (2011)
Lucille Ball, “I Love Lucy”

The Concept
A major part my design concept includes a “transforming” bedroom unit supported by two large truss structures on either side of the wings. It allows the bedroom to flip up and hover while two trucks upstage join and track downstage to form a kitchen, creating a split-screen effect on stage (see figure 1). Surrounded by darkness, these visuals imitate a cinema screen in which actors can walk out of, into the liminal space downstage- akin to a breaking of the fourth wall.

“The family are like parasites upon him. But when he transforms, he is less valuable to them and he becomes a burden”01
